Presbyopia is the inability of the aging eye to focus at near objects. The common ophthalmic solution
for presbyopes are Progressive Addition Lenses (PALs) that provide an additional optic power at the
lower part of the lens to enable clear vision for near distance. Shamir OverHead PALs offer a
solution for presbyopic astronauts during spaceflight thanks to a unique design that incorporates an
additional near vision zone located in the upper part of the lens. This allows clear vision of near
objects that are located both below and above the astronaut’s eye level, such as overhead
instruments and panels.
